Mexican Senator Tied to Sinaloa Cartel Arrested in San Diego – RedState

Every now and then, here in the United States, we are reminded that we share our southern border with what is essentially a failed narco-state, where the real power is held by the wealthy drug cartels. We have, however, made some inroads into these cartels; On Sunday, we learned of another, with the added news of the arrest of a Mexican senator. Sinaloa Senator Enrique Inzunza Cazarez has now been detained in the United States since Friday and faces numerous serious charges.
Sinaloa Senator Enrique Inzunza Cazarez, who faces drug and weapons charges, was arrested in San Diego by the Drug Enforcement Administration, several Mexican media reported Saturday.
The Justice Department and the DEA San Diego field office did not respond to a request for comment.
Inzunza Cazarez, 53, who is among ten current and former Sinaloa officials who were indicted in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on April 29, reportedly surrendered to federal authorities in Southern California.
He is accused of conspiracy to import narcotics; possession of machine guns and destructive devices; and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices.
Cazarez is not a penny player either:
Inzunza Cazarez, a member of the ruling Morena party, has been in office since August 2024 and previously served as secretary general of Sinaloa under Governor Ruben Rocha Moya, who was also indicted and resigned on May 2.
According to the 34-page indictment, the Sinaloa senator conspired with the Sinaloa Cartel faction, Los Chapitos, led by the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, to import drugs into the United States.
What is slightly surprising is the claim that Cazarez turned himself in, something these types of cartels don’t often do. Could he have been compromised, or is he looking for some sort of agreement, with the Trump administration tightening the screws on the cartels? Cazarez is not the first major political figure in Sinaloa to be arrested.

Here’s another interesting data point: There are reports that the CIA operates in Mexico, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua.
…In recent months, the CIA has deliberately worked more closely than ever before with some regional, state, and local Mexican officials, primarily because of the agency’s concerns that cartels have effectively infiltrated some elements of the Mexican government.
Further underscoring the distrust between U.S. and Mexican authorities, the U.S. Justice Department last month charged the sitting governor of Sinaloa, who is a member of Sheinbaum’s ruling Morena political party, and nine other current and former Mexican officials of actively conspiring with the Sinaloa cartel.
Note that Cazarez crossed the border to surrender. Is this part of a deal?

Cazarez was reportedly accused, alongside prominent Mexican businessman Enrique Diaz Vega, who also worked for a time in the Sinaloa state government, of interfering with the cartels, working with co-opted officials to protect the cartels. If this is true, and if Cazarez is now singing like a bird to the US federal government, then any deal he makes will have to involve a solitary prison sentence, and if he ever gets out, he will have to be buried deeper in the witness protection program than anyone has been to date.
That’s the price you pay for being a cartel toad. Lie down with the dogs, wake up with the fleas.
