MI State Rep Has Thoughts for Those Shocked That ‘Capitalist’ Trump Sat Down With ‘Socialist’ Mamdani – RedState

We’re just under a week away from Thanksgiving, and while it’s a little cooler here in the North Country, the political temperature is heating up. Fortunately, this keeps warm by default for those of us who live where it’s cold and are observers of the political shenanigans going on in the United States of America.

As most of you already know, the new hero of the communist/socialist eye is a guy named Zohran Mamdani, who was just elected mayor of New York City and hasn’t taken office yet. He met with President Trump on Friday at the White House, and it wasn’t as many meetings, you know, as the mainstream media was hoping for.

My colleague Jennifer Oliver O’Connell wrote about this historic meeting yesterday, and I suggest you take a look (see Art of the Deal: Trump meets with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, says ‘He’s going to change’).

Here in the Midwest, we sometimes have to pay attention to what’s happening on the “other left coast” to get an idea of what might happen to us one day soon. This is where Michigan State Rep. David Martin (R-Davison) had some thoughts that I agree with, and I thought I’d explore them here with you all.

According to his article in the Detroit News entitled “The American Dream Still Eclipses Socialism, and Indeed It Has.”

Rep. Martin begins on this point with…

Socialism is experiencing a strange resurgence in American politics. New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, calls himself a “democratic socialist.” A recent Gallup poll shows that 39 percent of Americans, including 66 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of independents, now say they approve of socialism.

He’s just nice here. No one approves of free content if they think that ultimately someone they know (or themselves) will have to pay for it.

Socialists would push Mamdani to make New York a BDS battleground

The idea is that people who get free things believe that no one they know has to foot the bill. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, but that’s the general idea behind it. They 100 percent I don’t believe they will ever be held responsible, and until someone very close to them is also forced to foot the bill, they really don’t care. If this ever changes, all hell will break loose.

Martin continues…

We all want to be rewarded for our own efforts. We want the dignity that comes from forging our own path, taking risks, creating value, and providing for our families. Under socialism, the link between effort and reward is weakened, if not completely erased. When this happens, initiative withers and opportunities diminish.

This point was long understood by Frédéric Bastiat, the 19th-century French economist who wrote that “life, liberty, and property do not exist because men made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property previously existed that caused men to make laws in the first place.” Bastiat recognized that the role of government is to protect our natural rights rather than control them.

Frédéric Bastiat is a name I have only come across before, but now I want to take the time to read his book, The Law, to delve deeper and maybe learn something. That he was French, and me too, that couldn’t have hurt.

While some might be shocked that the 47th President of the United States would have met anyone with the term “socialist” after their name, it is understandable. Yet, unfortunately, this is the climate we currently live in and, to Trump’s credit, he recognized this and rightly chose to meet with the future mayor of New York.

Trump, in a private meeting he and Mamdani had, was able to assess him, and I’m sure the president took a look at the man to see who was going to run his old city.

Maybe, if we’re lucky, POTUS had a chance to pass on to the future mayor a little nugget that Rep. Martin from my home state ended his op-ed with…

Capitalism, founded on freedom and personal responsibility, remains the greatest engine of opportunity the world has ever known. This is still the best path forward for our children, our communities and our country.

Capitalism is STILL the best way forward for the United States of America, and the future mayor of New York just met one of capitalism’s biggest proponents. Let’s hope it works.

Otherwise, New York City will be roasting more than just turkey next Thanksgiving.
