Former first lady Michelle Obama lamented the way the media highlights fashion choices on Wednesday, shortly after happily touting her choice of outfit.
Obama appeared Wednesday on the feminist podcast “Call Her Daddy,” where she touted her new autobiographical book, “The Look“. Her description on Amazon sums it up: “Michelle Obama explores the joy and purpose of fashion and beauty and how, when used with grace and care, they can uplift and affirm the values we hold most dear.” »
The former first lady recalled her early days in the public eye, connecting with the American people as she supported her husband, saying, “as my popularity grew, I got more coverage, right?” You know, not my education, not my, you know, not my professional career, but it started with appearance, and it got worse as we got better. »
She argued that the focus on her fashion choices and appearance was a political tactic aimed at slowing her husband Barack Obama’s political momentum.

“They weren’t doing that to my husband, were they? They weren’t describing him physically, and he was more present than me. So, I was like, ‘OK, well, that’s where it came from.’ It’s like, wow, it doesn’t matter who does it, when it comes to how we put women in their place, it’s like, OK,” Obama said, claiming the same thing happens to other female candidates, wives and celebrities. “There was no comment on the content of what I was saying. It was like, ‘Why did she wear that?’ and ‘Was that appropriate?’ And “what does that mean?” “And it all depends on how we look.”
However, in a moment that some netizens called ironic, “Call Her Daddy” host Alex Cooper asked his guest about her outfit in the first minute of the interview, the second question after asking how she was doing.
“Tell me about your outfit, how did you choose it?” » Cooper asked 45 seconds into the interview.

“My outfit, it’s a Meredith Koop original. And as we were thinking about promotions for the tour, there’s a photo that a lot of people have shown of me in Princeton, and Meredith Koop had the idea to update it – this is the updated version,” Obama said, pointing to an old photo of her in Princeton displayed in her book. “It’s a redesign, it’s the next version.”
“Oh, it’s so good,” Cooper said.
“My campus look, 2.0 or 5.0,” Obama said. “So we were like this is the perfect place to do it with Alex.”
