I want to share with you a letter from another TPM reader D.A.. He makes a point that I completely agree with, but it wasn’t made clear enough in yesterday’s post. I completely agree that there is legal expertise. I have made this clear in my actions over two decades paying some of the best (and most expensive) legal counsel – primarily but not exclusively on 1st Amendment and defamation law. This of course goes beyond that. Law, in its broadest scope, is a complex set of rules and practices that we, as a society, have agreed to – sometimes explicitly, usually implicitly – to govern ourselves and by which we resolve the innumerable disputes – civil and criminal – that arise between us. But it is in the nature of any specialized and professionalized profession to project a penumbra of authority beyond its actual area of expertise.
