Malibu, California – A mountain lion attacked and injured an 11 -year -old girl in front of her family’s home in Malibu, California, then hunted his mother before he was frightened, authorities announced on Monday.
The girl was near a chicken coop on the property on Sunday evening when the cougar attacked him from behind, biting his arm, leg and lower back, according to the spokesperson for the Department of Fish and California fauna, Peter drew.
The young victim was treated in a hospital for minor injuries, said Tira.
During the attack, the daughter’s mother heard her child’s cries and ran with one of the girl’s brothers and sisters.
“It was then that the mountain lion continued the mother and the brother,” said Los Angeles Times.
Another member of the family had a paralyzing pistol and the noise of the weapon frightened the big cat, said Tira.
The fauna officers then found a mountain lion in the region and euthanized it. DNA tests will confirm if it is the same animal that bit the girl.
Mountain lions rarely attack people. There have been 27 confirmed attacks against humans since 1986, most of them non -fatal, according to fish and fauna state data.
The most recent fatal attack took place in March 2024, when a mountain lion killed a 21 -year -old man near Georgetown in northern California.
Last September, a mountain lion attacked a 5-year-old boy when he played near his family’s picnic table at the Malibu Creek state park. The child was treated for injuries not putting his life in danger.
