NEW DELHI: Former India captain MS Dhoni added another remarkable achievement to his legacy off the cricket field after becoming the highest individual taxpayer in Jharkhand and Bihar combined in the financial year 2025-26.

The revelation was made by Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Bihar-Jharkhand) Dr D Sudhakara Rao on Thursday while addressing the media in Ranchi.

“The total collection from Bihar and Jharkhand during the financial year 2025-26 was around Rs 20,000 crore, of which Rs 12,000 crore was collected from Jharkhand alone,” Rao was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

He further confirmed that Dhoni topped the list of individual taxpayers in both the states.

“MS Dhoni was the highest individual taxpayer combining Bihar and Jharkhand in the previous financial year,” Rao said, although he refused to disclose the exact amount of tax paid by the former Indian skipper.

Jharkhand contributes a significant share

According to the Income Tax department, Jharkhand alone contributed nearly 60 per cent of the combined tax collection of the two states. Officials said around 70 per cent of the overall revenue came from tax deducted at source (TDS).

Among the companies, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and CMPDI were among the largest taxpayers.

Officials admitted that mining activities in Jharkhand were affected due to heavy rains during the financial year, which impacted tax collection figures.

“During the previous fiscal, the mining activity was a bit affected due to heavy rains, which impacted the collection. We hope to cross the Rs 20,000 crore mark in tax collection in the current fiscal,” Rao said.

Only 40 lakh files come back

The department also revealed a significant gap between PAN card holders and active taxpayers in the region.

Out of nearly 5.5 crore PAN card holders in Bihar and Jharkhand, only around 40 lakh people are currently filing income tax returns.
