Four people are believed to be trapped under a multi-storey building after it collapsed in Kenya’s capital Nairobi.
On Friday, January 2, the Kenya Red Cross Society announced that a building under construction collapsed early in the morning in the South C shopping center area of Nairobi County.
“A multi-agency response team is on scene to manage the situation,” the Kenya Red Cross said on X.

Hours later, the organization said the area had been cordoned off as the National Disaster Management Unit, Nairobi County, national police and the Kenya Red Cross continued their search and rescue operations.

Shortly after, the Kenya Red Cross provided another update, noting that search and rescue operations continued into the night, while a building adjacent to the scene was being inspected after showing signs of potential collapse.
Four people were believed to have been trapped in the collapse, Geoffrey Ruku, the Cabinet secretary for the civil service, told reporters, according to the Associated Press.
Safia Ali Aden, identified by the media outlet as the sister of one of those trapped, told reporters at the scene that her brother had made a phone call “while he was there.”

Searches underway in the collapsed building
“We are asking the government to intervene quickly so that we can find my brother alive,” she said, according to the news agency.
