My most anticipated upcoming phone isn’t this year’s iPhone, it’s a Chinese flagship filled with one-of-a-kind features

I always liked the idea of a foldable flip phone. Since the reveal of the original Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, I’ve been enticed by the prospect of having a second, small screen – almost like a smartwatch built right into your phone.
Being able to see the time at a glance without picking up your phone is very convenient, especially if, like me, you sit at a desk for hours a day and don’t want to constantly be searching for your phone.
When you’re on the move, quickly switching between music is also a breeze and a crowd-pleaser if you’re taking photos at a social event. Seriously, I’ve never seen some of my friends more excited than when they realized they could use the small screen like a mirror to take the perfect photo. Unfortunately, living with the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra for several weeks dashed all my rose-tinted hopes.
It’s not a bad phone, don’t get me wrong, but the clamshell design leads to a lot of unavoidable compromises. Battery life was pretty poor, especially compared to my daily driver Honor Magic 7 Pro at the time, as there’s only so much stuff you can cram into such a small form factor. The screen itself also looks like a disaster waiting to happen, with a fragile hinge that could come to a violent, crunching end thanks to a single wayward grain of sand.
Add in the infamous crease, which is distractingly visible when you’re trying to watch movies or play games, and you end up with a product that’s cute and cool, but not very practical for everyday use.
But what if I told you there was a flagship product coming with all my favorite features of a foldable clamshell, without any of the big drawbacks? Meet the Xiaomi 17 Pro, the phone that’s straight to the top of my most wanted list.
You don’t need to know much about the world of phones to see what’s special about this one. It’s business right out of the box with a conventional 1220 x 2656 AMOLED display and a very, um, Inspired by the iPhone general appearance. Flip it over to reveal a party on the back, with a small screen in the camera bump that can be used for all sorts of cool features.
You can personalize it with your own wallpaper and a range of handy widgets that do everything from telling the time with your choice of clocks to showing the local weather and your next appointment in the calendar.
Media controls also appear automatically when something is playing, allowing you to browse songs without having to reach for the phone when it’s face down on a table – reducing the chances of you being pulled away from your current task by the lure of your TikTok feed.
Of course, it can also show notifications and incoming calls. If your phone vibrates, you don’t need to wake up the main screen to see if it’s actually worth responding to. Open the Camera app and suddenly it’s a small viewfinder, finally allowing you to take good selfies with the mega triple 50MP main camera rather than the single selfie lens.
The gamer in me is also very excited about the ability to play small games on it. It’s certainly a nifty feature, but Xiaomi even sells a nice official case with buttons like that of a Nintendo GameBoy so you can control these little challenges more easily.
Ultimately, I’m just happy that a manufacturer is releasing something that makes phones fun again. In a world where companies like Samsung and Apple seem to be devoted exclusively to making increasingly thinner generic panels, I’ll take something a little fancier like this any day.
