In a new study published in Nature Communications, a team of chemists has revealed a radically simple way to attach a highly sought-after “molecular handle,” known as a dichloromethyl group, to complex compounds. Instead of relying on the aggressive techniques of the past, using heavy metals or radiation, the team used a common, natural amino acid called proline to gently choreograph the assembly.
