Newsom Makes Desperate Move After DOJ Announcement About Prop 50 Election Observers – RedState

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom will have observers monitoring observers following the Justice Department’s announcement that they will be in the state to make sure all is well for the Newsom-orchestrated special election on Nov. 4.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta accused President Donald Trump of having observers in the state to “sow doubt” about the integrity of the Proposition 50 special election, which focuses on voters determining whether the so-called temporary removal of the independent redistricting commission is acceptable.

“They will not be allowed to intervene in a way that the law prohibits,” Bonta, a Democrat, told reporters during a virtual news conference. “We cannot be naive. The Republican Party has requested intervention from the US DOJ.”

“He [Trump] is preparing the ground. He’s socializing an idea that is very dangerous,” Bonta added. “All the indications, all the arrows point to this being a prelude to something more dangerous in the 2026 midterms – and perhaps beyond.”

In response to the state watchers’ news, Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, posted on X that she thought it was a joke.

“I thought it was a joke, so I didn’t comment… But apparently irony is dead…” Dhillon’s post read.

As my RedState colleague Ward Clark reported Friday, the DOJ announced it would send election observers to New Jersey and California at the request of each state’s Republican Party:

Five counties in California and one in New Jersey will face increased scrutiny in the upcoming 2025 elections.

The AP had more:

The Justice Department is preparing to send federal election observers to California and New Jersey next month, targeting two Democratic states holding off-year elections following requests from state Republican parties.

The DOJ announced Friday that it plans to monitor voting sites in Passaic County, New Jersey, and five counties in southern and central California: Los Angeles, Orange, Kern, Riverside and Fresno. The goal, according to the DOJ, is “to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law.”

“Election transparency translates to trust in the electoral process, and this Department of Justice is committed to the highest standards of election integrity,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement to The Associated Press.

After the news broke, Newsom made it clear he wasn’t happy about it and accused the DOJ of sending observers to try to intimidate voters.

“It’s a bridge too far,” Newsom said Friday, alleging it was some form of voter “suppression.”

RedState’s Nick Arama reported on Dhillon’s response to Newsom’s tantrum, setting the perfect tone.

As RedState readers know, if Proposition 50 is approved by voters, it would allow Democrats to gerrymander congressional districts in the state, where the map has already been massively changed to benefit Democrats.
