NY Mets Suffer ‘Longest April Losing Streak in Franchise History,’ and All Signs Point to Gracie Mansion – RedState

Outside of March Madness and professional sports playoff games, I don’t pay as much attention to sports as I used to, for reasons that would require another article to explain in detail. But I pay a lot of attention to what’s happening in politics, which is why the story of the New York Mets’ losing streak in April caught my attention.

As of this writing, the Mets sit at the bottom of the National League East, with a 7-15 record. In fact, it’s the worst record in the National League, tied for worst in Major League Baseball with the Kansas City Royals of the American League Central.

According to ESPN, the Mets’ current 11-game losing streak is “the longest April losing streak in Mets franchise history, and it’s the fastest New York has reached 15 losses since 1983.”

The reasons for the Mets’ poor April are hotly debated by the notoriously brutal New York/New Jersey sports media and other sports aficionados, including Outkick founder Clay Travis:

Almost no one on the team hits. Top prospect Carson Benge is hitting .150 with a .217 slugging percentage. Bo Bichette, big free agent, has had great difficulties. Jorge Polanco hits .179. Brett Baty has an on-base percentage of .197. Marcus Semien, replaced by Brandon Nimmo, has just one home run and an OPS of .577. They want to offend so badly that they signed Tommy Pham. The Dodgers, as a team, created 138 weighted runs, 38% better than the league average. New York? Entering Saturday, their team wRC+ had a score of 81, 19% worse than the league average.

They scored 18 points during their 10-game losing streak, or just 1.8 per game. It’s ugly.

Yes, the Mets could recover and save their season, especially with Soto expected back in the next 7-10 days. But it’s a stark reminder that building a team isn’t an exact science, even with a mammoth payroll at or near the top of the league.

But one thing that Travis and other avid observers of sports and politics have also pointed out is how the Mets’ losing streak began after a now-infamous meeting of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani with Mets mascots on April 9:

This is reminiscent of what was called at the time the Obama curse, with the Free Beacon noting in 2019 that the former president “has developed a habit of inflicting pain and humiliation on athletes whose games he decides to attend.”

Some people have compared the Mamdani curse of hugging Mets mascots to the record of the New York Yankees since meeting with President Trump last September:

I’m not sure of the accuracy that it is, but I wouldn’t have thought twice about Mamdani trying something like this, to be completely honest:

Do you have any other complaints or suggestions for the Mets or MLB in general? Let us know in the comments. 🙂

Editor’s note: New York City is now facing the consequences of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s socialist takeover.
