The resort town of Ocean City is set to host a remembrance event honoring members of the U.S. military this month.

Service members who died in service will be honored during the town’s annual Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday, May 24, at 1 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the Firefighters Memorial on North Division Street and the Boardwalk.

The event will include remarks from Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan and Brig. Gen. Joed Carbonell-López, commander of the 175th Wing of the Maryland Air National Guard. They will reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Two skydivers from Skydive OC will open the ceremony by parachuting from about 5,000 feet while delivering the American flag. The event will also feature a National Guard vehicle display and a patriotic performance by the 229th Maryland Army National Guard Band.

In addition, the traditional wreath-laying ceremony will include a tribute from uniformed representatives of each branch of the U.S. military.

Townsfolk are invited to watch as each service member carries and places a floral wreath in front of their service’s insignia, honoring those from their branch who gave their lives in defense of the nation, the town said in a May 11 news release.

“Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation,” Mayor Rick Meehan said.

“As a community, we gather not only to honor their courage and dedication, but to ensure their legacy is never forgotten,” Meehan said. “We are grateful to our distinguished guests and participants who help us pay tribute to these American heroes.”
