Peace? Putin Indicates Russo-Ukraine War Now ‘Moving Toward Completion’ – RedState

Well, this would be a great Mother’s Day gift for many Russian and Ukrainian mothers who are worried about their sons being maimed or killed during the Russian-Ukrainian War; Russian Tsar Vladimir Putin, speaking to reporters, said the war was “nearing completion.” It is a completion that, if achieved, will end a conflict that has killed, by most estimates, 1.8 million people, making it Europe’s largest conflict since 1945.

Do we dare to hope? Here is a word from my colleague Scott McClallen from the sister site Townhall:

Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters he believed the war between Russia and Ukraine was “coming to an end.”

The war began in February 2022. On Friday, President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire.

Around 1.8 million people died during the war.

And this clip shows Tsar Vladimir I making the statement:

Note that Putin seems to be leaving himself out of the picture, noting that war is “…still a serious thing.”

The two sides are currently in a three-day ceasefire, marking Russia’s celebration of Victory Day, which marks the end of World War II in Europe, or as it is known in Russia, the Great Patriotic War. President Trump announced the ceasefire in Washington on Friday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded on his official X account on Friday:

He writes, also referring to an exchange of prisoners:

In recent days, there have been many calls and signals regarding tomorrow’s setup in Moscow within the framework of our long-term sanctions against Ukraine. The principle of symmetry in our actions is well known and has been clearly communicated to the Russian side. An additional argument in favor of Ukraine in determining its position has always been the resolution of one of the key humanitarian issues of this war, namely the release of prisoners of war. Red Square is less important to us than the lives of Ukrainian prisoners who can be repatriated.

That is why today, as part of the negotiation process under the auspices of the American side, we have obtained Russia’s agreement to carry out a prisoner exchange in the format 1,000 for 1,000. A ceasefire regime must also be established on May 9, 10 and 11. Ukraine is constantly working to bring back its population from Russian captivity. I asked our team to quickly prepare everything needed for the exchange.

I thank the President of the United States and his team for their productive diplomatic engagement. We expect the United States to ensure that the Russian side respects these agreements. Glory to Ukraine!

Here’s what’s not mentioned:

First: what will be the conditions of a long-term ceasefire? Will there be a return to status quo ante? Will Russia return some of the Ukrainian territory it currently holds, or will the lines remain in place? As for Crimea, if President Zelensky has any idea of getting Crimea back, all I can say is “a big chance”.

Second: will it be a ceasefire or a possible treaty? Who will mediate between Russia and Ukraine? The European Union? NATO? The United States? It seems to me that this is a European problem and that Europe should solve it.

Either way, President Putin’s statement should make us cautiously optimistic, but remember, we’ve been cautiously optimistic before, only to see things blow up again. And, once again, we must not forget the caution of George Santayana: only the dead saw the end of the war.
