The NFL’s streaming partners have faced significant and well-founded criticism for their game day broadcasts. However, one of these partners has just proposed an idea that will delight many fans.

Peacock is integrating new Dolby products into its streams that will “enhance the images and sounds of games.”

“Our live streams on Peacock are already in HDR, and we also introduced Dolby Atmos last year, which was a huge leap in immersion,” said David Bohunek, senior vice president of global video engineering at NBCUniversal. “You have to have quality sound with quality picture, but with Dolby Vision we think we can take it to the next level.”

One of these innovations will allow fans to get rid of advertisers they don’t like.

“With AC-4 and audio customization, we can let customers do what they prefer with very simple control in our own user interface,” Bohunek said, “and maybe let them turn off feedback completely if they want.”

So if you’re sitting there watching a Sunday Night Football game and have become nauseous from Cris Collinsworth’s incessant pandering to Josh Allen or Pat Mahomes, you finally have a way to ignore it without cutting the game.

However, as with all great things, there is a catch. The new improvement will only be available on the Peacock app, not TV shows.

“In streaming, we’re able to operate at a much faster rate of change than we ever could in more traditional broadcasting,” said John Couling, senior vice president of entertainment at Dolby.

The AC-4 is expected to be available in late 2026.
