Poland Scrambles Jets Amid Renewed Drone Threat in Nearby Ukraine Territory

Poland has scrambled planes in a “preventive” operation in local airspace in the middle of the renewed threat of Russian drone strikes on neighboring Ukrainian territories, according to the operational command of the Polish armed forces.
The threat forced the authorities to close the Polish city airport in Lublin, and the air sirens have resounded to more than half a dozen counties.
However, the operation ended shortly after, the Polish armed forces indicating that it will continue to monitor the situation in Ukraine and will remain a constant provision to ensure the security of national airspace.
Why it matters
Poland remains on alert after 19 Russian drones violated its airspace earlier this week. None of the drones seemed to target Poland, but only moved its airspace to hit targets from eastern Ukraine.
Polish forces, in partnership with certain planes of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) organization, have shot some of the drones. The officials then invoked article 4 of NATO in response.
The attack raised important questions about Russia’s motivations in the midst of its current war with Ukraine which began in February 2022, NATO launching an “eastern sentry” to strengthen the defenses along the eastern flank of the Alliance.
Moscow rejected the accusations that she intentionally targeted Poland, the Kremlin propagandists pushing the line that Russia is unjustly accused.

What to know
The alerts began to appear on the official profile of the Polish armed forces account on X on Saturday, warning that the forces have blurred the planes and activated air and radar air defense systems.
The first alert was released around 10:30 am HE (5.30 pm local time), citing the “threat of unmanned air vehicles (UEAV) in the Ukraine regions on the border of Poland”.
Polish and allies aircraft rushed in response, but the Polish command stressed that “these actions are preventive in nature and aim to secure airspace and protect citizens, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened regions”, according to a translation of the position.
The operation continued for about two hours, with a follow -up position at 12:35 p.m. announcing that the operation had ended and that all the systems had taken up “standard operational activities”.
What is article 4 of NATO?
Article 4 of NATO declares: “The parties will consult together each time that, in the opinion of one of them, territorial integrity, political independence or the security of one of the parties is threatened.”
The best known article 5 invokes the collective defense of all NATO allies against another state or entity which attacked a member, while article 4 triggers official discussions between members following a violation of integrity or territorial security.
What people say
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X: “Due to the threat posed by Russian drones operating on Ukraine near the border with Poland, aviation preventive operations – polished and allies – have started in our airspace. The ground defense systems have reached the highest state of preparation.”
In a later article, he wrote: “The level of threat canceled. Thank you to all the people involved in the operation in the air and on the ground. We remain vigilant.”
What happens next?
Poland called for a meeting with NATO officials after invoking article 4 of the Alliance Charter and will examine the incident and share the conclusions with its allies. Meanwhile, the benefits of the airspace violation continues to increase tensions between Russia and the West.
