Bort Escoto, now the longest-tenured basketball coach in the City Section with 33 seasons at Sylmar High, has apparently become much more lenient when it comes to where and when his players can shoot, given that the Spartans have scored 100 points or more four times in the last month alone.

Sylmar (18-12) advanced to the Division II semifinals and will host Marquez (16-14) on Friday.

Robert Winn, averaging 18.7 points, and Aiden Garcia, averaging 16.3, led the Spartans’ offense. Andrew Galvez is at 11.6

Marquez, seeded No. 10, will be a tough opponent, having eliminated Eagle Rock, seeded No. 2, last week. Highly recruited football star Elyjah Staples has been nearly unstoppable in the last two games. He scores, rebounds and leads.

Escoto has been on his best behavior this season. He only received one technical foul, which is considered a good thing for him.
