President Trump taps Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland

President Donald Trump announced he would tap Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry to serve as U.S. special envoy to Greenland, saying the island is key to national security.
“I am pleased to announce that I am nominating GREAT Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as United States Special Envoy to Greenland. Jeff understands how critical Greenland is to our national security and will strongly advance our country’s interests for the safety, security and survival of our allies, and of course the world. Congratulations Jeff!” » the president said in a Truth Social article.
Landry said the new position would have no impact on his role as governor.

“Thank you @realDonaldTrump! It is an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to integrate Greenland into the United States. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!” Landry wrote in an article on X.
The Republican, who has served as governor since early 2024, previously served as Louisiana attorney general and a lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“This appointment confirms the United States’ continued interest in Greenland. However, we emphasize that everyone – including the United States – must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen noted in a statement, Reuters reported.

Trump has expressed his ambition for the United States to acquire Greenland.
“For the purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America believes that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” he asserted in part of a December 2024 Truth Social article.

“Greenland is an incredible place, and people will benefit immensely if and when it becomes part of our nation. We will protect and cherish it from a very vicious outside world. LET’S MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!” he said in a January 2025 Truth Social article.
