Qatar launched a diplomatic approach to the Trump administration this week as senior officials from the two countries met in Washington and Doha.

Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani visited the US capital for back-to-back meetings with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday and Thursday. Al-Thani and Vance discussed “the strong and strategic bilateral relations between the State of Qatar and the United States, as well as ways to strengthen them,” Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said. The Prime Minister then spoke with Rubio to launch the seventh U.S.-Qatar Strategic Dialogue. The two leaders reaffirmed the partnership between their nations and discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation on economic and security objectives, according to the State Department.

“The Secretary of State expressed appreciation for Qatar’s role in supporting U.S. objectives in the Middle East, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere, and reiterated the two countries’ desire to work closely together on shared goals,” Senior Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited Qatar’s National Command Center, where Interior Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani welcomed her for a tour.

Noem received briefings on command and control systems, advanced surveillance technologies and the center’s role in crisis management, Qatar’s Interior Ministry said. She also visited the Tournament Command Center, which manages security operations at major sporting events.

Qatar is home to Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East.
