No wonder we don’t believe it

Regarding “It’s horrible that many Americans think that the assassination attempts on Trump were staged”, May 16: Ingrid Jacques believes that it is horrible that many Americans think that the various assassination attempts on President Donald Trump were staged.

Unfortunately, she fails to place the blame where it belongs: on leadership.

Like most Americans, I am not close enough to the events to prove whether these attempts were real or not. Instead, I must trust others to accurately report the facts.

So it should come as no surprise to any of us that when the president and his entourage constantly and intentionally undermine trust in professional journalism, many people are left with crossed wires.

Many voices have always been raised to claim to know the truth.

What is new is leadership actively engaged in destroying the institutions that give us the best chance of knowing what is real.

So people don’t believe Trump is being honest about these assassination attempts? Big surprise.

Good cop, bad cop, math

I often hear that 99% of police officers are “good cops”. If I accept this figure, it means that 1% are “bad cops”.

The Columbus Division of Police has 1,800 officers. That means 18 of them are “bad cops” who should be fired every year.

In a decade, 180 “bad cops” are expected to be fired. Over the course of a typical 30-year career, a “good cop” would see 540 colleagues fired because they were “bad cops.”

I want to ask Brian Steel: How many bad cops have you seen fired in your career? If I accept that 99% are good cops, have you defended too much the hundreds of “one percent” who should not be in public service police positions?

I just want to check the calculations.
