The Boston Red Sox gave Brendan Rodgers a chance.

Instead, Rodgers has been cut loose just before Opening Day.
Red Sox beat writer Brendan Campbell reported the news on X on Wednesday:
“The Red Sox have released veteran infielder Brendan Rodgers, who was in camp as a non-roster invite this spring before suffering a right shoulder injury earlier this month that ultimately required surgery.”

It’s been a tough ride for Rodgers.
He was originally the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft out of a high school in Florida, taken by the Colorado Rockies.
Rodgers hasn’t been able to live up to that draft status, though, aside from one Gold Glove.

His best season with the Rockies was 2021, when he batted .284 with 21 doubles and 15 home runs.
The next year, his defense improved for that 2022 Gold Glove and a career-best 4.3 Wins Above Replacement.
Rodgers quieted down the following two years with the Rockies, then joined the Houston Astros for 2025. With Houston, Rodgers batted just .191 in 43 games.

The Red Sox brought him aboard this offseason with some questions on the infield, but Rodgers already looked to be on the outside looking in before he got hurt.
Now, it’s not clear how much time he’ll have to miss, but whenever Rodgers recovers, he’ll be free to sign with whatever organization might still want him.

Rodgers is 29 years old, and he’ll likely try to continue his career at some point, but it won’t be with the Red Sox right now.
