Reign-Racing match abandoned after USWNT’s Savannah DeMelo collapses on field | NWSL

Louisville Racing midfielder Savannah Demelo was stable and alerted after she was taken by ambulance on a match on Sunday against Seattle due to a medical emergency.

The match at the Lumen Field in Seattle was canceled after the incident at the end of the first half. Demelo sat on the field before collapsing. The coaches rushed alongside him and the players of the two teams were visibly shaken.

The television cameras moved away from the scene on the field and the match went at halftime early. Reign players emerged shortly afterwards to applaud their fans because an announcement was made that the match had been abandoned.

“Savannah, who received immediate care on the medical staff, is stable and alert. She was transported to a local hospital for a more in -depth assessment,” said Louisville.

The match was aimlessly when it was suspended. The rest of the match will be played on a manner agreed by the two teams, and will be picked up where it had stopped.

“We are careful with Louisville during this period and thank our fans for their support,” said the reign in a statement. The team said other updates will be provided if necessary.

The NWSL said its first priority was Demelo’s health and security, and the league was in close communication with the race in Louisville.

“We recognize the concern that this incident can cause, in particular in light of recent conversations around players’ safety,” said a statement. “The NWSL remains determined to ensure that the highest standards for medical care and emergency intervention are in place in each match.”

Demelo, 27, left a match in March due to the tightness of stunning and was stretched on the field. She revealed in May that she was dealing with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism.

Demelo was the fourth choice of the NWSL 2022 draft in southern California. In three seasons with Louisville, she played 61 games with 14 goals. She was on the list of US national teams for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, playing in two games.

Earlier this year, Angel City defender Savy King collapsed in a match in Los Angeles and required heart surgery. The league was criticized because the match continued after King was withdrawn from the field by ambulance. A few days later, the League expressed its regret for the decision and said that the game should have been canceled.

The NWSL rules for 2025 indicate that the league “recognizes that emergencies can occur which make the start or the progress of a game not recommended or dangerous for participants and spectators. Certain categories of events automatically trigger the league office to be assessed if a delay or a postponement is necessary. ”
