Self‑destructive behavior among Hermann's tortoises on a Macedonian island is leading to 'demographic suicide'

On the strictly protected island of Golem Grad in North Macedonia, turtles are destroying their own population. During prolonged courtship, aggressive males exhaust females and frequently push them off cliffs. As a result, there are now around a hundred males for every female capable of laying eggs. This is the only example known to date of demographic suicide in nature.
