Shooter ‘Charged from 50 Yards Away’
The armed suspect at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner “charged from 50 yards away,” President Donald Trump said during a late-night press conference Saturday.
Trump held a news conference after being taken to the WHCA dinner after a gunman charged a magnetometer and shot a Secret Service member in the chest. The officer was wearing a bulletproof vest, and although he was shot at close range “with a very powerful weapon,” Trump said “the vest did the job” and the officer “is doing very well.”
The president provided more details about the shocking incident, saying the room itself was “very, very secure.”
“You know, he charged at 50 yards,” Trump said. “So he was very far from the room.”
Trump also shared security footage on his Truth Social account of the suspect running by.
Despite being “very far from the venue,” Trump said the Washington Hilton, where the event was held, was “not a particularly secure building.” He went on to say:
It’s always shocking when something like this happens, it’s happened to me quite a bit, and it doesn’t change the fact that we’re sitting next to each other, the First Lady to my right, and I heard a noise and I kind of thought it was a set. I thought it was a tray falling several times, and it was quite a loud noise, and it came from quite far away. He hadn’t reached the area at all.
“They really caught it, but so it was pretty far away, but it was a gun, and some people really figured it out pretty quickly. Some people didn’t. I was watching to see what was happening. I probably should have gone down even faster,” Trump continued.
When asked why this type of incident seems to happen to him, Trump responded that the individuals who have the greatest impact are targeted by assassins.
“They don’t go after people who don’t do much, because they enjoy it. And when you look at the people who have done one or the other, whether it’s an attempt or a successful attempt, those are people who have a lot of impact. Just look at the names out there, the big names. And I hate to say I’m honored by that,” Trump said.
