However, with so many improvements, the brand has chosen to stray from its roots in several places. If you prefer the design ideology of the old CX-5, there’s good news. You can buy a lightly used CX-5 with the optional turbocharged engine for less than a new CX-5, which does without the turbocharger.

We think the 2023 CX-5 is as practical as it should be. Some competitors offer a roomier rear seat, but even taller passengers will never feel particularly cramped. The story is the same for cargo space, which is smaller than the segment average, but large enough for most things buyers will carry. Rear-seat legroom and cargo space have increased in the 2026 model.

We feel that the new CX-5 has lost a little of its character. While the updated steering wheel is cool, everything else seems a little too much in the direction of minimalism. The outgoing model had a much more interesting, luxurious and unique interior. If you opt for a 2023 Turbo model, you also get some of the best features on offer, including leather upholstery and trim, wood trim, a power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, and acoustic glass to keep road noise from entering the cabin.

Despite the changes, we still prefer the old CX-5

Mazda may not realize it, but when they launched their current lineup of vehicles, excluding the new CX-5, they were extremely ahead of the competition. From quality to performance, they were more like an entry-level luxury brand, and the 2023 CX-5 Turbo proves it. The new model may have a little broader appeal, but it’s lost much of what made it special. If we had $30,000 to spend, we’d get a 2023 Turbo instead of a new model.
