Skydiver rescued after crashing into scoreboard during Virginia Tech football scrimmage

A skydiver crashed into the scoreboard at Lane Stadium before Virginia Tech’s spring football game Saturday.

Virginia Tech officials said on X that the skydiver “was secured and is currently stable” following the rescue efforts. The incident delayed the start of the spring game.

“I am grateful for the game days with Hokie Nation and for the first responders at Blacksburg and Virginia Tech whose quick actions brought today’s skydiver back to the ground without injury,” the university said.

The parachutist’s name has not been released.

“Our priority remains their well-being,” Virginia Tech officials said in a statement. “We express our sincere gratitude to the first responders, event staff and medical personnel for their rapid, coordinated and professional response.”

Video footage showed the skydiver parachute landing between the “C” and “H” on the letters of Virginia Tech at the top of the scoreboard before first responders rescued him.

CBS News has reached out to the Blacksburg Fire Department for details about the incident.
