The Best Way to Label Your Circuit Breaker and Electrical Outlets

Moving to a new house is a great exciting adventure and a disturbing mystery. You take a crowded space with strangers, some of which will not manifest as long as you are not comfortably installed. We try to alleviate these unknowns in various ways – home inspections and maintenance control lists, for example – but there is a mystery too many owners does not leave too late: labeling your circuit breakers.

The worst time to determine which circuit breaker controls what is in the event of an emergency. And clearly labeled circuit breakers save time and efforts when you or an electrician perform maintenance or repairs. In addition, your local construction codes could be required. So, if you live with a mysterious circuit breaker panel since you moved, it is the day you take it and label everything.

Start with a floor plan

Your first step is to create a floor plan for your home with marked sockets and lights. This should not be sophisticated – an approximate handmade sketch will work as well as a file generated by computer. Make sure each room is represented and give rooms descriptive but generic names-instead of “Billy’s Room”, call it “South West Chamber”. In this way, entrepreneurs and future owners will know what you are referring to. Then mark each socket, switching and lighting in each room, giving everyone a number or another unique label. Paste it inside the panel door. In this way, everyone can quickly reference the labels of the circuit breaker with the layout of the house.

Climb out

Then go to each room of the house and start mapping specific outlets and switch to circuit breakers. There are several ways to approach this step:

• With a partner. The old -fashioned way still works very well: ask someone to hold the circuit breaker panel and turn one at a time. Whenever they turn off one, consult the points of sale until you find the “cold”. Check by handing over the circuit breakers to make sure that these points of sale become “hot”. You can use an output tester to make this safe and easy to do, but you can also use a night light.

• By yourself. If you have no one to help you, you can check the sockets either by connecting something in what you can hear from afar (like a radio), by methodically deactivating the circuit breakers and noting when the sound stops. Alternatively, you can buy a circuit competitor. These work by connecting a transmitter in an outlet, then passing the wand over the circuit breakers until you identify which socket is used.

When you link a circuit breaker outing, mark it on the label that you will stick next to the circuit breaker and on your floor plan. This will facilitate the reset or deactivation of the breakers when you need it.

If you identify breakers who do not seem to be connected to anything, let them move away. Check if they are connected to the home infrastructure – the furnace, the water heater, the CVC system (which generally require larger and double circuit breakers) or outdoor lighting. If you cannot understand what the circuit breaker is connected, let it and plan to bring an electrician to understand it.

Labeled wall plates

While you check the sockets and switches in each room, remove the wall plates and write the label on the other side before replacing them. This is an additional layer of information you can use – if you replace a catch, you can see at a glance at which the circuit breaker must be deactivated before continuing – in addition it is an additional safety layer. If the labels do not correspond, then something is wrong with your mapping, and you have to repeat the process to make sure you have labeled everything correctly.

Hold a separate file

Finally, plan to set up a separate written recording. A photo of your labeled panel and the floor plan will do the trick, but consider a handwritten graph kept in your house maintenance workbook (which you have, right?) Or a spreadsheet in the cloud with each clearly labeled circuit breaker. The calculation sheets are excellent because they are easily updated each time you have new circuits installed and can be shared with entrepreneurs even before they arrive at home so that they have all the information they need.
