Brondello out at Liberty less than a year after coaching team to first WNBA title | New York Liberty
The New York Liberty will not renew the contract of coach Sandy Brondello for next season, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Brondello led freedom to his first WNBA championship last season, but the team had injuries to play players Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu this year. New York won the head n ° 5 in the playoffs and lost in the first round against the Phoenix Mercury.

“We would like to thank Sandy Brondello for her eternal impact on New York freedom,” said Director General of Liberty Jonathan Kolb. “Sandy ends her mandate in New York as the most victorious coach in the history of the franchise, and she took us to summits never seen as the first head coach to direct the freedom of a championship. We wish Sandy the best of her next chapter.”
Brondello went 107-53 in his four seasons with the team. The Liberty had a better franchise start in 2025, winning nine consecutive games, only to trip in the coming months while the injuries have wreaked havoc.
She had the support of her players after the team lost in the playoffs last week.
“For anyone who is this kind of Sandy questions here, it’s a resilient group,” said Stewart after the defeat of match 3 against Phoenix last week. “And her back and we have hers.
