The Insidious Strategy Behind the Democrat-Led Shutdown – RedState

The Democrat-imposed shutdown will be approaching two weeks and there is no end in sight. Despite a clear path to reopening government, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and his cronies chose to obstruct a clean bipartisan constituent resolution that had been on the table since day one.

And while they claim to be defending the little guys by pushing for an extension of temporary Obamacare subsidies in the COVID era, a more insidious game is brewing. Take a look at the following articles. What do you notice about them?

Keep in mind that Democrats have long proclaimed the filibuster to be a racist relic of the Jim Crow era. I guess that makes Schumer a racist, given that he uses it while falsely suggesting that others are preventing the government from reopening. The long game is evident, however. Democrats are using the filibuster to try to force Republicans to get rid of them, because once they’re gone, they’ll never come back.

Nothing is ever forever in American politics, at least so far in history. Democrats believe they can regain full power by 2028 by taking back the Senate, House and White House. For all I know, they may be right. Just when you think a party is on the ropes, things can change quickly depending on a variety of factors, and it would be naive to suggest that a Democratic resurgence is impossible, or even improbable.

With that as their hope, they want the filibuster to go away so they can go crazy as soon as they take over the reins. “Electoral reform” that essentially legalizes non-citizen voting? A “national right to abortion” and “gender-affirming care? Massive new social programs? Internet censorship laws? Gun bans? All of this would happen within the first few weeks, once the filibuster ends.

What Democrats don’t want to do, however, is end the filibuster themselves, and their incentives aren’t even subtle. They know it would be an absolute godsend if Republicans did it for them for something as mundane as passing a clean CR, and we’re already seeing the mainstream press pushing in that direction as well. Senate Majority Leader John Thune was recently asked about this prospect.

“The 60-vote threshold has protected this country,” Thune says when asked whether the Rs should override the filibuster to reopen the government.

This is the correct position. I know that some Republicans disagree because they themselves are convinced that nuclear power is the only path to success, but that unintended consequences exist. We know this because Democrats have experienced it repeatedly over the past two decades, from ending the filibuster on Supreme Court nominees to attempting to prosecute now-President Donald Trump. Short-term gains rarely outweigh long-term political difficulties.

The other argument is that Democrats will blow up the filibuster the next time they are in power anyway. I’m not so sure. Given that the fundamental makeup of the Senate favors Republicans, Democrats will likely have something much closer to a tie than a multi-seat advantage the next time they gain the majority, and in order to get for that majority, they would have to gain seats in red states. It is unlikely that the conditions for phased approval to abandon the filibuster will be met.

Even today, if Democrats magically held a 51-49 advantage, there is no chance that Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) would get the tie-breaking vote. This is why Democrats are trying so hard to get Republicans to end the filibuster for them. Fortunately, the Republican Party seems to recognize what’s going on here and doesn’t seem very willing to play along.
