Rare 2,000-year-old war trumpet, possibly linked to Celtic queen Boudica, discovered in England

Archaeologists have found a rare 2,000-year-old war trumpet in England that could have been used in Queen BoudicaThe wars against the Romans. The battle trumpet, also known as a carnyx, was part of a hoard of metal objects discovered before the construction of a residence in West Norfolk last year.
The treasure was announced Wednesday January 7 by Pre-construction archeologythe company that led the initial excavations, and Historic Englandthe organization that coordinates research and conservation efforts.
Battle trumpets were primarily used by Celtic tribes of Iron Age Europe and were often taken by Roman soldiers as war trophies, according to Historic England representatives. “This recently unearthed example is one of only three known in Britain and one of the most complete found in Europe,” they said in a statement.
THE carnyx was a bronze wind instrument similar to a trumpet, but it had an elongated, vertical shape that ended in an animal with an open mouth, like a wild boar. It was a common item of military equipment for Celtic soldiers, along with chain mail, shields and spears.
Experts from the National Museum of Scotland have created a replica of a carnyx which, when played by musician John Kennygives an idea of the sound of the battle trumpet.
Look on it

Given the metal hoard’s estimated date to the first century AD and its discovery in west Norfolk, the items may have been used by the Celts who were trying to resist the incursion of the Roman Empire.
In 60 AD, Boudica (also spelled Boudicca), queen of the powerful Iceni tribe based in present-day Norfolk, led a revolt against the Romans. But Boudica and the Iceni were defeated, paving the way for Roman rule over Britain.
The treasure was removed from the ground in a single block so that its contents could be studied with x-ray imaging and CT scans before being carefully searched in the laboratory. Research and conservation work is underway, and the discovery of the treasure will be featured in an upcoming episode of the show.Digging for Britain“.
