The UK government reportedly wants Anthropic to expand its presence in London

With the United States and Anthropic in the midst of a major conflict, the United Kingdom is trying to convince the San Francisco-based AI company to expand its presence on English soil. According to a report from The Financial Timesemployees of the UK Department of Science, Innovation and Technology have been working on proposals including the expansion of Anthropic’s London office, as well as a possible dual stock market listing.
The UK’s strategy follows a public row between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense earlier this year. After the AI company said it would not budge on certain AI guardrails, the Department of Defense terminated its contract and ultimately designated Anthropic a supply chain risk. Even though the designation is currently temporarily blocked by a court injunction, the dispute is far from over. Meanwhile, the UK’s efforts to woo Anthropic have intensified in recent weeks due to the company’s disagreements with the US, according to FTthe sources.
With the debacle with the Defense Ministry showing no end, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is expected to visit the UK in May, according to FT. However, even in London, Anthropic will have to compete with OpenAI, which already committed in February to expanding its presence in the English capital.
