As the new year rolls around and we return to our usual cycle, the news has gushed and as a result the press is already in its dysfunctional overdrive. So with that, we put ourselves in overcaffeine mode to catch up!

In just over a week, we captured an authoritarian dictator, set up a billion-dollar, cross-country tax fraud scheme, and then a shooting involving an ICE agent sparked outrage among journalists everywhere. There’s a ton of stuff! So let’s strap on our brand new set of waders for the 2026 assault and wade through the media swamp last week.

COMPETITORS

National Public Radio – Oddly enough, the radio channel aired a segment in which he was disturbed that President Trump called Nicolás Maduro a dictator; this is the same network that was comfortable with Democrats calling Trump a dictator. The news outlet saw the evidence of Minnesota fraud revealed by Nick Shirley and quickly investigated – Nick Shirley. Then, with its report criticizing Nick’s journalism, NPR was forced to admit numerous errors in its journalism. Media analyst Eric Deggans sees worrying fortunes for all media… because of Trump.

Washington Post – The newspaper rocked the media complex by announcing that Trump would not support Maria Corina Machado as leader of Venezuela due to his resentment of her Nobel Peace Prize. This, according to “two people close to the White House”. (Was it a bartender and waitress from the local tavern?!) WaPo delivered what it said was a definitive summary of the ICE shootings in Minneapolis. Then, after saying the officer wasn’t hit by the SUV, he had to rethink things when a new video emerged showing he was hit — something the newspaper is trying hard to avoid admitting.

New York Times – The Times gave its own Zapruder-style analysis of the various videos of the Minneapolis ICE shooting. The newspaper says President Trump claimed there was widespread child custody fraud in several states “without evidence”; he then claimed that there had been fraudin the same sentence. The newspaper avoided covering Mamdani manager Cea Weaver and her history of communist comments, saying only that she was “facing criticism” but without detailing her comments.

MS NOW – tries to say Jacob Soboroff Renee Good was just an innocent bystander and found himself involved in ICE operations. When the new ICE agent video came out, Brandy Zadrozny was upsetwondering why the officer had recorded. At an ICE protest in Minneapolis, Katie Tur pitched a reporter on a field interview with a protester, wearing a Black Lives Matter hoodie, condemning ICE and criticizing the president: and a graphic appeared declaring it a “Trump supporter.” Jen Psaki praised the “citizen journalists” who recorded the ICE shooting, but had nothing to say about the new video showing the agent being struck by Good’s vehicle.

THE WINNER

PBS NEWS

The network announced that the defunding of public broadcasting last summer meant it had to ax its PBS News Weekend show, opting out for the final time.

The network then provided examples of why ending things was a good idea.

The first night after the shooting by an ICE agent, the news coverage was deeply partisan and attacks on the administration were at the forefront. On another night, they featured protests in Minneapolis, and the show highlighted those who claimed ICE was a threat to democracy.

In a separate report on the shootingRegarding this new video of the confrontation, PBS said the ICE agent was “pushed back” and yet somehow “wasn’t hit.”

During coverage of the first anniversary of the Los Angeles wildfires, while some issues were highlighted, no Democratic politician leading the state was mentioned.

In a baffling dose of deflection, the network tapped MS NOW correspondent Jacob Soboroff (who this year topped the “Townhall 50” list of the worst journalists in 2025) to sell his new book about the Los Angeles wildfires, placing the blame on Trump — who was not in office when the flames broke out.

They gave the opportunity to a Toronto professor to say that January 6 marked the beginning of a “phase of fascism” with this new administration.

David Brooks weighed in on the Minnesota controversy: After saying he wouldn’t pass judgment, he added, “Once people with guns and power start acting like thugs, well, things are going to get out of hand.” »
