The new @WhiteHouse hive is expected to increase annual honey production by approximately 30 pounds, enabling even greater use in preparing White House culinary dishes, serving as official gifts from the @POTUS and @FLOTUS, and supporting charitable donations of healthy foods to local food kitchens.
The statement reads:
First Lady Melania Trump announced the expansion of the White House honey program with the addition of a newly installed and fully functional beehive on the South Lawn. Handcrafted by a local artisan in the image of the White House, the beautiful new hive will add two new colonies of bees to the two existing colonies that already produce the White House’s signature honey.
The new hive is expected to increase annual honey production by approximately 30 pounds, allowing for even greater use in preparing White House culinary dishes, serving as official gifts from the President and First Lady, and supporting charitable donations of healthy foods to local food kitchens.
The facility will help existing colonies pollinate the White House vegetable garden, flower cutting garden and vegetation on the nearby National Mall. It will also serve as an educational element, providing visitors to the South Lawn the opportunity to take a closer look at a working colony and learn about pollination and food production.
This is indeed a smart and creative expansion of a program that is not only good for the environment, but also, in true MAHA fashion, for the overall health of the natural resources that help us produce real food, and for the health of the White House visitors and guests who consume the honey produced.
White House honey is known for its light flavor of clover and linden, with a subtle hint of citrus. It is used by the chefs of the executive residence to sweeten teas, prepare vinaigrettes and make desserts. The expansion, funded by the Trust for the National Mall, continues a legacy of stewardship between administrations, adding to the legacy of the vegetable garden, flower cutting garden and other beekeeping efforts now supported by White House Chief Horticulturist Dale Haney and local beekeepers. The new hive and base were designed by White House Executive Residence staff and handcrafted by a local Virginia artisan.

This latest renovation will be part of a state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla of Great Britain. On Monday, their majesties will tour the White House grounds, which include the South Lawn and the Beehive Expansion, according to a statement from the First Lady’s office.
On the afternoon of Monday, April 27, the President and First Lady will greet Their Majesties upon their arrival at the South Portico of the White House. The couples will then head to the State Floor where they will have tea in the Green Room.
After tea, Their Majesties will join the President and First Lady for a tour of the newly unveiled and expanded White House Beehive, nestled on the South Lawn near the White House Vegetable Garden.
It’s fitting that First Lady Melania Trump chose the 250th anniversary of American independence to enlarge the hives at the White House. American colonists used beekeeping and honey production to circumvent King George III’s high taxes. Honey could be produced locally and had various uses as a sweetener, medicine, and even as payment for workers. As our nation grew, bees became a critical resource that drove America’s ingenuity and prosperity.
