This sleek EV is cheaper than a Kia Niro—and its built by a luxury brand

Affordable electric crossovers aren’t usually where you go looking for a premium experience. Most options in this segment focus on value first, with simple interiors, modest performance, and just enough tech to get the job done. Luxury brands, on the other hand, tend to sit comfortably above that price bracket. At least, that’s how it’s always worked.

That’s what makes this new entry from Volvo so surprising. It undercuts mainstream rivals like the Kia Niro EV while still delivering the clean design, comfort, and refinement you’d expect from a premium badge. Instead of charging extra for the name, it flips the equation entirely.

And that’s where things get interesting. When a luxury-branded electric SUV costs less than the segment’s budget-friendly options, it forces a rethink of what entry-level really means, and what you should expect for your money.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites, including the EPA.

Volvo’s EX30 is an affordable electric crossover loaded with comforts

And it undercuts mainstream rivals in this segment

When looking for an affordable crossover, you’re not likely to even think of luxury brands like Volvo. The EX30, however, is a very reasonably priced electric crossover that comes with all the hallmarks you’d expect from the Swedish automaker. It is so affordable in fact, that it undercuts rivals like the Kia Niro EV.

Plus Twin Motor

Ultra Twin Motor

Cross Country Twin Motor

$49,545

Although it won’t be around for much longer, the Kia Niro EV currently has a starting price of $41,195, which is just under $1,000 more than the Volvo. Yes, we know that the margin is fairly small, but the comparison demonstrates that the Swedish brand isn’t penalizing you for opting for their luxury badge. In the small electric crossover segment, the EX30 is priced extremely competitively for something so sleek.

Volvo has included plenty of standard niceties in the 2026 EX30, which is why we think that the base trim is the way to go. The single motor setup is a little underwhelming, though, so we’d upgrade to the Plus Twin Motor. Not only do you get a much more powerful all-wheel drive setup, but you get niceties like a premium sound system, a panoramic sunroof, tons of interior tech, and Volvo’s full suite of safety features.

If you are a little more adventurous, the new Cross Country trim offers some off-road prowess. It has been raised almost an inch and its roll bars and springs have been softened.

The Volvo EX30 is designed more for shooting about town than for long road trips, but we think that’s pretty typical of any subcompact SUV, electric or not. It is worth noting that there has been a smattering of new EVs recently launched in this segment that offer a bit more range, but all-in-all, the EX30 isn’t underwhelming. In fact, put your foot down, and you’ll find it quite exciting.

Every 2026 Volvo EX30 comes with one of two setups. The base rear-wheel drive setup features a single motor that delivers a pretty reasonable 268 horsepower. A lot of people will find this setup good enough, with it offering plenty of go off the line. All-wheel drive models add another motor to the mix, making a total of 422 horses instead. These more powerful models can get up to 60 miles per hour in 3.3 seconds, half the time that it takes the Kia Niro EV to get there.

While most Volvos offer a decent amount of straight line pep, they don’t usually focus on handling heroics. The EX30 follows this trend. You’ll be able to impress everyone with insane pulls from a stop light, and then equally impress them with the smooth and comfortable ride that follows when you let off the pedal. Despite being the more off-road focused model, the Cross Country takes this even further thanks to its softened suspension.

As we already mentioned, EVs in this segment don’t often come with a ton of range, and the EX30 is no exception. In fact, a lot of newer models now offer a little more juice. The Volvo’s standard 64-kWh battery pack does last longer than some rivals, including the Kia Niro, the Mini Countryman, and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

Volvo claims that, when hooked up to a DC fast charger, the EX30 can go from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 28 minutes.

Volvo’s classic clean and comfortable design ideology shines in the EX30

A no-nonsense approach that doesn’t feel boring

A lot of electric automakers are going with more minimalist interiors, with the idea that selling an appliance means that it doesn’t need to be all that interesting to look at. Volvo, however, are the kings of minimalism, and they have been executing it flawlessly for decades. The EX30 manages to keep things clean and simple without feeling as dull as the likes of the Tesla Model Y.

Interior space is the one fatal flaw of the EX30. The small interior dimensions may easily be enough to put people off this little crossover. While the front seats are exceptionally comfortable, the back seats are only really spacious enough for kids to feel comfortable. The cargo hold is also pretty small, especially for a crossover. There is still a lot to love about this Volvo, but if you’re looking for something particularly practical, you may want to examine some other options.

If you rarely carry any passengers and back seat room is of no consequence to you, then you’ll love the cabin of the EX30. Volvo has gone with an eco-friendly approach here, with a ton of recycled materials throughout the cabin. Despite this, you’ll still find that the quality feels much better than the price this electric crossover demands. You get some nice standard features as well, including a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, and ambient interior lighting.

Infotainment and technology

Volvo has committed pretty hard to their touchscreen in the EX30. A large 12.3-inch vertically oriented screen is mounted to the center of the dashboard and houses controls for just about everything in the EV. We do find it odd that Volvo hasn’t included an independent gauge cluster or heads-up display, instead choosing to display all vital information on the center screen.

All the tech features you’d want in a modern car are standard here, including wireless smartphone mirroring, wireless charging, and 5G capability. It also comes equipped with a standard nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The sound system is unique in that there is a large sound bar installed across the bottom of the dashboard.

Small and short on range, but loaded with comforts at an affordable price

The EX30 isn’t a perfect machine. Its shortcomings are pretty obvious, with the most prominent being the lack of space beyond the front seats. However, it has some pretty alluring strengths too, and there are a lot of buyers that will find the Volvo more appealing than other small EVs. It is loaded with standard luxuries, despite a starting price tag that is very competitive for this segment, and its acceleration and comfort are unmatched at this price point. If passenger space isn’t a huge concern of yours, the EX30 offers some pretty fantastic value for money.
