Thousands evacuated in Philippines as super typhoon nears land

More than 10,000 evacuated were sheltered in schools and evacuation centers in the Philippines on Monday while heavy rains and the winds of the sugar Typhon Ragasa tolerated the extreme north of the country.
The typhoon, which is gaining strength when it takes place on a collision trajectory with southern China, was to touch the earth on the Babuyan Islands of the Philippines around noon.
The sparsely populated islands are around 740 kilometers (460 miles) south of Taiwan, where smaller -scale evacuations were also in progress.
At 11:00 am (0300 GMT), maximum winds supported by 215 kilometers per hour were reported in the center of the storm, with gusts reaching up to 265 km / h while it was west towards the Babuyans, the National Weather Service said.
“I woke up because of the strong wind. He struck the windows, and it looked like a machine that was lit,” said Tirso Tugagao, a resident of Aparri, a coastal city in the north of the province of Cagayan.
“I see from my house here that the tall waves crashes on the shore,” said the 45 -year -old teacher. “I pray that everyone will be safe.”
The head of the Cagayan catastrophe, Rueli Rapsing, told AFP that his team was prepared for “the worst”.
President Ferdinand Marcos said on Facebook that he was closely monitoring the situation and that all government agencies were “on alert to help anywhere and whenever it needed.”

In Taiwan, the state meteorological service predicted a chance of “extremely torrential rain” in the east of the country.
“Its storm radius is quite large, about 320 (kilometers). Although the center of the typhoon is still at a certain distance, its large strong wind field and its external circulation already affect parts of Taiwan.”
James Wu, a local fire officer, told AFP that evacuations continued in mountainous areas near Pingtung.
“What worries us the most is that the damage could be similar to what happened during the Typhon Koinu two years ago,” he added, describing a storm that saw public services collapse and sheet metal roofs sent in the air.
Government schools and offices were closed in the Manila region on Monday and in 29 Philippine provinces in anticipation of strong precipitation.
Government specialist John Grender Almario said on Sunday that “serious floods and landslides” could be expected in the northern areas of the main island Luzon.
The threat of Ragasa’s floods comes just one day after thousands of Philippins went down to the street to protest against an increasing scandal of corruption involving flood control projects that have been built or never completed.
The Philippines are the first major terrestrial mass in the face of the belt of the Pacific cyclone, and the archipelago is affected by an average of 20 storms and typhoons each year, putting millions of people in areas subject to disasters in a state of constant poverty.
Scientists warn that storms become more powerful as the world warms up due to the effects of man -focused climate change.
