Tuesday’s special election in Tennessee is crucial to the balance of power in Congress, Matt Van Epps, Republican congressional candidate in Tennessee’s 7th District, said during an appearance on Breitbart Daily News.

Epps, endorsed by President Donald Trump, is running against Democratic Rep. Aftyn Behn and explained that the election, which will be held today, December 12, will largely determine the future direction of Congress.

“This is a crucial election for the balance of power in the House for the Republicans to have the majority. You know, when you look at the next few months and you see people resigning, and you know these seats are potentially in play, you look at what California does, it could very well come down to one vote,” he said.

“And that’s why – a unique voting margin in the House. That’s why this seat is so crucial. We have it. We have to hold it today, because it’s literally about the fabric of America. It’s about the direction we want to move our country in, where we continue to move America forward first. We continue to make all the great things happen, lowering the cost of living, keeping our border secure, keeping men out of sports women,” Epps said.

“I mean, just go down the list, and in this race today, it’s as crucial as we look at it over the next few months and why 2026 is so critical for Republicans,” he continued, emphasizing that every vote counts. Furthermore, he said that every voter today makes a decision about the direction the country should take.

“And we know we are going to win when our team puts on the jersey and takes the field,” he added.

When asked what Republicans should continue to do to address the affordability problem, Epps pointed to keeping taxes low and reducing regulations.

“It’s very important in this context. … We need more affordable housing, in close proximity to the workforce. … I’m pro-nuclear. Tennessee has been a leader in nuclear, and that’s what we need to continue to do. The first small modular reactor will be at the Clinch River site in East Tennessee in 2032. We should do it as quickly and as safely as possible. It will serve as a model for how we can continue to operate these small modular reactors that will reassure our network, which is a matter of national security, reduce costs at the pump,” he continued.

“It will make food, feed and fertilizer cheaper for our farmers, lower utility costs. And that’s what happens when we unleash oil, gas and nuclear to unleash America’s energy dominance. That’s a key part of affordability,” he said, also pointing to lower health care costs.

“We need to look at full price transparency and full quality transparency so the consumer can make an informed decision. We should continue to expand health savings accounts. And those are some of the things we’re going to do. From day one, we’re going to support our working families, our farmers, our military and our veterans across our district,” the Republican hopeful added.
