Tony Gonzales Announces His Resignation From Congress – RedState

Just after Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-14) revealed he was resigning from Congress, Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales (TX-23) announced he would resign as well.
Gonzales posted a brief note about it on X at 6:30 p.m. ET, an hour after Swalwell posted his:
There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all. When Congress returns tomorrow, I will declare my retirement from office. It has been my privilege to serve the great people of Texas.
– Rep. Tony Gonzales (@RepTonyGonzales) April 13, 2026
As RedState reported in early March, Gonzales, who like Swalwell faced calls for expulsion, abandoned his congressional reelection bid just days after primaries put him in a May runoff with Republican candidate Brandon Herrera, a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment.

“This happened after his affair with his now-deceased Regional District Director Regina Santos-Aviles was exposed. [who committed suicide]”, and pressure from GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04) and GOP House leadership to suspend his campaign,” RedState’s Jennifer Oliver O’Connell noted at the time.
Gonzales’ announcement also comes just days after an explosive article in the San Antonio Express-News that alleged he engaged in predatory behavior with female staffers, including sending sexually explicit text messages to his former political director, which we also reported on:
In a text from June 15, 2020, Gonzales reportedly wrote, “I know what I want and I won’t stop until I get it.” » The relentlessness he allegedly exerted on this employee, pressure to which she claims she did not give in, was also used against Santos-Aviles, with tragic results.
As is the case for Swalwell, it’s unclear when Gonzales’ last day will be. We will keep you informed.
Editor’s note: The 2026 midterm elections will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both houses of Congress.
