President Donald Trump has spoken out about the mail-in ballot printing error in Maryland, alleging ties to “corrupt” Democratic Gov. Wes Moore and calling for a Justice Department investigation under Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“In Maryland, they sent out 500,000 illegal ballots, and they got caught!” Trump wrote about Truth Social, after Fox News reported concerns from the Republican National Committee’s Election Integrity Unit and activated a response.

“So now they’re going to send out 500,000 more mail-in ballots, but no one knows what’s going on with the first 500,000 they sent out. Plus, a lot of those ballots went to Democrats, so any Republican running in Maryland doesn’t have a chance!”

Trump baselessly claimed the Democratic governor may have been involved in the error for which the state’s ballot printer apologized.

“This was done by the state’s corrupt governor, Wes Moore,” Trump’s message continued. “He allowed this to happen to make sure Democrats won. It never made sense to me that Maryland would automatically be considered a Democratic state, but now I understand why. I’m sure it’s been going on for years.”

Maryland election officials have not reported that 500,000 illegal ballots were sent. The State Board of Elections said more than 500,000 voters requested mail-in ballots and that a vendor error affected voters who received their mail-in ballots before May 14. Officials said all affected voters would receive replacements to “maintain the integrity and security of mail voting.”

Trump asks Blanche and the Justice Department to review the handling of ballots in Maryland’s mail-in primary.

“I will ask the United States Attorney General and the DOJ to immediately open an investigation into this situation,” his Monday afternoon message concluded.

The Justice Department is suing six states for refusing to turn over voter rolls and warning of “open defiance” of federal law.

State elections administrator Jared DeMarinis rejected Trump’s claim that “illegal” ballots were distributed, saying the problem involved some voters receiving the wrong party’s ballot.

“Mail voting is an integral part of the election process,” DeMarinis wrote in a statement. “With more than 500,000 voters requesting a mail-in ballot, we want to eliminate any doubt about its integrity or accuracy; that’s why I have arranged for replacement ballots to be sent out.”

“Please be assured that we are actively answering phones and emails and will remain transparent throughout this situation,” he added. “We will do everything we can to ensure everyone involved is aware of the situation and knows how to vote. Every vote counts, your voice will be heard, and our elections will remain verified, open, transparent and secure.”

The state’s vendor, Taylor Print & Visual Impressions (TPVI), Inc., said replacement ballots are being prepared and mailed, and that “election officials have put in place safeguards to ensure that only corrected ballots included in the replacement mailing will be accepted and counted.”

There have been no public details on these “guarantees.”

“A portion of voters received ballots intended for a different voter segment,” TPVI’s election services team wrote in a statement. “We understand the seriousness of this matter and the importance of accuracy and trust in all election-related communications.”

Notably, “all ballots will be returned by 05/29/2026,” TPVI added, leaving recipients responsible for destroying the first ballot they received.

“Voters should safely discard or destroy the original voting materials they received and use only the replacement ballot sent in the new mailing,” the seller concluded.

The confusion in the primary vote has renewed Republican calls for a federal review of the state’s voter rolls.

“This kind of election mismanagement is why the RNC is already suing Maryland for not cleaning up its voter rolls,” RNC Chairman Joe Gruters told Fox News on Monday.

“Marylanders deserve answers after this unacceptable failure. The RNC and Maryland GOP demand transparency on how this happened, who will receive replacement ballots, and what safeguards will be used to prevent duplicate votes.”

The RNC’s Election Integrity Unit is committed to responding quickly by deploying local legal experts to ensure midterm voting, from the primaries through the November general election.

“In response, the RNC and Maryland GOP are expanding our vote protection operations with voter hotlines, legal oversight and voter education across the state,” Gruters told Fox News Digital.

Maryland’s primary elections are scheduled for June 23. Voters who want to receive a mail-in ballot must request one by June 16, according to the State Board of Elections.
