Trump and Zelenskyy’s meeting with European leaders marks a historic moment

Washington – Seven European leaders joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington in a rare demonstration of transatlantic unit on Monday. The rally marked the first time in decades that such a delegation of allies had met at the White House in such pressing circumstances.

Shortly afternoon, one by one, the heads of state and the NATO partners adopted the doors of the White House, where they were welcomed by the protocol chief of President Donald Trump, and in the case of Zelenskyy, by Trump himself.

Some met Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and other officials that morning. Others went to the White House directly from Dulles and other airports. They were there to strengthen Zelenskyy after a disastrous visit to the White House in February, when he clashed with Trump and Vice-President JD Vance-and after Trump held almost three hours head-on with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.

The demonstration of support for Zelenskyy involved French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO secretary, Mark Rutte Ukraine.

The display took place a few days after Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska and before a possible Trump meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy while Trump launches as a potential peace broker.

Inside Monday’s oval office, evoking a conference room scene, Trump sat behind the resolved office, military flags on the back, while Zelenskyy and the European delegation faced it, as evidenced by a photo shared by the White House. Made of oak wood caught in a British ship, the office is a recall of the 19th century obstacles of good will between the important allies, a gift from the British Queen Victoria in the United States. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent are seen in orbit in the background, as well as high members of the White House staff.

There are few precedents for the rally, which merged diplomacy with Trump’s usual verve.

In 1941, Franklin Roosevelt welcomed Winston Churchill off the Côtes de terre-Neuve to sign the Atlantic Charter, setting the Allied objectives for the end of the Second World War and meetings that would decide the fate of Europe and Asia. During the Cold War, the summits in Washington helped decide on the terms of German reunification. They understood meetings with the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in the middle of a key question to find out if Germany would join NATO. And in 1950, the British Prime Minister rushed to Washington to consult Harry Truman to fear the possible use of nuclear weapons during the Korean War.

“Washington has often been the scene of these great moments of diplomacy. But it was the speed at which it gathered that was so striking and distinguishes it, “said Marc Selverstone, director of presidential studies at the Miller Center of Public Affairs of the University of Virginia. “Everyone realized that it was a moment of crisis.”

The urgency was reflected in the speed with which the events of the last days met: Trump’s discussions with Putin on Friday were followed by the arrival of the leaders in Washington on Monday morning. “Each of them went on a plane 48 hours later and flew to the United States of America,” said the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, rushing to Washington in order to keep a momentum in Peace in Living Ukraine.

The day also offered other moments made for television, while Trump escorted the leaders in a sort of gift shop, which he nicknamed the “Monica Lewinsky room” in reference to a former meeting president, where he showed rows of red hats of firefighters referring to his country slogans, including one for 2028.

Tell through photos shared online by his team, Trump presented an imposing figure during Monday meetings. In a photo published by the deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, Zelenskyy stood in front of a map of Ukraine while Trump looked at him. Another image published by the White House showed Trump sitting behind his historic office, this time with Vance and Rubio in front of him, the telephone handset based on the desk as he spoke with Putin.

For Zelenskyy, Monday also offered a reset. After an oval office meeting stretched this year, he took a more diplomatic tone on Monday, offering Trump and others his thanks more than a dozen times, especially for the invitation, for Trump’s efforts “to arrest murders and arrest this war”, for the letter from Melania Trump to Putin to protect children, for a program to buy American weapons and European partners for their support. On his X account, he offered an abundance, continued well thanks on Tuesday.

Wearing a suit instead of his usual military fatigue, he told Trump, welcoming him that the outfit was “the best I had”.

“I love it,” said Trump, ultimately sharing a video of the warm exchange on his social media platform, Truth Social.

He asked what his message was to the inhabitants of Ukraine, Trump told a journalist: “We love them.”

Vance, who had publicly faced Zelenskyy at their last meeting of the White House, also sought to smooth relations, publishing a photo of their handshake.

Finland’s participation has brought its own symbolic weight, with a reminder of a path from an apparently insoluble conflict with a Soviet nuclear propulsion Union, which Stubb made directly.

“We have of course our own historical experience with Russia of the Second World War, the War War and the War of Continuation,” said Stubb. “And if I look at the silver lining of our position at the moment, we have found a solution in 1944, and I’m sure we can find a solution in 2025.”
