President Donald Trump criticized Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., who is running for re-election, in a Saturday morning Truth Social Post, calling him “sleazy” and a “terrible guy.”

Trump initially endorsed Cassidy’s primary challenger, Rep. Julia Letlow, R-LA, in January, and renewed his support for her in his message Saturday.

“VOTE TODAY FOR JULIA L. She is a winner who will NEVER let you down,” Trump wrote.

Trump’s criticism of Cassidy has focused on the senator’s vote to convict Trump in his 2021 impeachment.

“Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana is a disloyal disaster. His entire past campaign for Senate revolved around ‘TRUMP,’ how he’s with me all the way, and then, after he won, he turned around and voted to impeach me for something that has now proven to be complete ‘bullshit!’ He knew it at the time, but he didn’t care,” Trump wrote.

Cassidy voted yes to convict Trump on a single article of impeachment that accused Trump of inciting insurrection in 2021. “Our Constitution and our country are more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty,” Cassidy said at the time.

Since then, he has been mired in a contentious relationship with Trump.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Cassidy was instrumental in the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to serve as Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). But he did so only after extracting a number of concessions from Kennedy Jr. and sharply criticizing Kennedy’s past positions on vaccine safety.

Trump then lambasted Cassidy in April, blaming him for the failure to nominate Kennedy Jr. ally Casey Means as surgeon general.

“For months, Senator Bill Cassidy (from the GREAT State of Louisiana!), a very disloyal individual whose support for ‘TRUMP’ got him elected, but who then voted to impeach ‘President Trump’ over what turned out to be a hoax and complete scam, stood in the way of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nominee, Casey Means, for the important position of U.S. Surgeon General,” Trump wrote in an April 30 article on Truth Social.

He intensified his attacks on Cassidy ahead of Saturday’s Republican primary in Louisiana, while continuing to bolster Letlow, whom he supported before she even officially entered the race.

“Not only did he encourage me to run this race, but to have his complete and total support was, wow, the honor of my life,” Letlow told Fox News Digital.

Letlow, a former communications administrator at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, leads Cassidy in most major polls, with the Real Clear Politics (RCP) polling average showing her holding an 11.5 point lead over Cassidy.

According to RCP, Cassidy is even behind Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming, who is also running for the GOP nomination.

If either candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, they will be the Republican Party nominee to face a Democratic opponent in the Nov. 3 general election. If no candidate obtains more than 50%, the top two candidates will advance to the second round of elections scheduled for June 27.

Fox News Digital has contacted Cassidy and Letlow’s offices for further comment.
