New countryside management plans aim to diversify England’s most famous and picturesque rural areas, lest they become “useless” for the rapidly emerging New Britain, a report says.

National landscapes, a group of government-designated areas of outstanding natural beauty, are targeted by diversity plans because they are perceived to be a “white environment”. According to a report from The Daily Telegrapha proposal for diversification in one such landscape, the Malvern Hills – whose beauty is well known for inspiring the great composer Sir Edward Elgar – states bluntly that the area must change because it suits white people who value solitude and contemplation.

In contrast, people from ethnic minorities tend to “prefer social companionship”, it has been claimed. He says: “Many minority people have no connection to nature in the UK because their parents and grandparents did not feel safe enough to take them or had other survival concerns. »

Although it is well understood that the UK Labor government is already engaged in a campaign of thinly disguised hostility against the countryside, the groundwork for Defra’s new plans began long before the left party came to power. The Telegraph reports that the new plans build on reports published from 2019, when the Conservative Party was in power – a party that once relied heavily on its traditional rural electoral base – aimed at making campaigns multicultural.

One of them is said to have said:

We all pay for national landscapes through our taxes, and yet when we visit, we sometimes feel like national parks are an exclusive, mostly white, mostly middle-class club.

… Many communities in modern Britain believe that these landscapes are of no importance to them. The countryside is seen by both black, Asian and minority ethnic groups as well as white people as a truly ‘white’ environment. If this is true today, then the gap will only widen as society evolves. Our campaigns will end up having nothing to do with the country that actually exists.

Another criticized the campaign again and said:

Participants from ‘visible’ minority groups spoke of the countryside as a space associated with English history… Protected landscapes were closely associated with ‘traditional’ pubs, which offer limited dining options and cater to people with a drinking culture. As a result, Muslims in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi group said this contributed to a feeling of unwelcomeness.

The UK has experienced extremely rapid demographic change over the past 40 years, with most of this century’s population growth due to migrant arrivals alone. But the way these arrivals have been distributed has been very uneven, with urban concentration meaning that some of the UK’s biggest cities, including London and Birmingham, are no longer predominantly white British. Rural areas have not been affected, however, with demographic data showing that the vast majority of the country, in terms of area, remains over 90% white British.

As reported last year, demographers analyzing official government data predict that white Britons will be a minority in Britain by the 2060s.
