UCLA Med School Illegally Discriminated by Race – RedState
Here’s the thing about principles: they apply the same way, every time. If race-based discrimination is wrong, then it is wrong no matter who discriminates or who is discriminated against.
However, the American left does not seem to understand this. As I have often pointed out, they are concerned with principles, not principles. College admissions have, in recent history, reflected this. But times are changing; The David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is finding out now, as the Justice Department released the results of an investigation into the school’s admissions.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division conducted a year-long investigation into admissions policies and practices at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) David Geffen School of Medicine.
The department found evidence that UCLA leaders intentionally selected applicants based on their race. Documents reviewed by the Division reveal that UCLA adheres to the dubious claim that patients receive the best care when treated by a doctor of the same race, rather than the most qualified.
Full disclosure: I am not without personal concerns about this. Our oldest granddaughter was admitted to a medical school, not this one, but the one in Texas, and her admission was surely based on merit. She worked her way through her pre-med program, studied while other kids were partying, and she worked as a certified nursing assistant to gain personal experience in patient care and maintained an excellent GPA. She was admitted on merit. This is the only way for anyone to be admitted to one of these institutions. That’s not what UCLA did.
“UCLA’s admissions process focused on racial demographics at the expense of merit and excellence – allowing racial politics to distract the school from the vital work of training great doctors.” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Racism in admissions is both illegal and un-American, and this department will not allow it to continue. »
“Federal law and Supreme Court precedent are clear: racial discrimination has no place in our nation’s institutions of higher education,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California. “The illegal and abhorrent behavior of the UCLA School of Medicine is abhorrent to our Constitution and the founding principles of our nation.”
Not to mention the very real risk involved in providing patient care. Did the David Geffen School of Medicine let admissions standards veer so that they could achieve a certain “correct” proportion of plumbing, skin tone, and sleeping partners? This seems likely.

Whether or not they messed with the norms, what they did was clearly wrong, and not just because of a Supreme Court ruling. This is something that is not bad because it is illegal; It’s illegal because it’s false. This discrimination based on race or national origin is fundamentally wrong. And the great irony is that the left, people on the political left, are the quickest to cry “racist!” »And then, as in this example, they engage in overtly racist policies.
Yes, racist. The David Geffen School of Medicine, regardless of the fancy, DEI-based, squishy language it wrapped it in, engaged in racist admissions practices. Actually, damn it, racism. There’s no fuzzy language that you can wrap this in to make it something else. Fortunately, we have an excellent Department of Justice, and especially an excellent Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Rights Division, Harmeet Dhillon, who is cracking down on these racist practices.
There are two things to remember from this affair: the left, once again, has proven that it is above all a question of principles and not of principles; and when the left falsely accuses those of us on the right of something, like racism, they are almost always guilty of it themselves.
