Ukraine should receive binding guarantees
Ukraine’s supporting states agreed on their contributions to efforts to end Russia’s war at a meeting in Paris, a senior EU official said Tuesday evening.
“We are ready to commit to a system of politically and legally binding guarantees that will be activated once a ceasefire comes into force,” European Council President António Costa told X after the consultations.
He said the EU would contribute to efforts to ensure the security guarantees Ukraine needs for any agreement for lasting peace.
Costa notably mentioned supporting Ukraine on its path to EU membership, which also aims to ensure the country’s future prosperity.
He also discussed newly planned financial aid amounting to 90 billion euros ($105.2 billion) for the next two years, as well as the ongoing EU training mission for Ukraine’s armed forces.
“Ukraine must be in the strongest possible position, before, during and after any ceasefire,” Costa said.
According to the French government, representatives of more than 30 countries, as well as the EU and NATO, took part in the high-level meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing on Tuesday in Paris.
