Ukraine’s Zelensky Sounds a Hopeful Tone After Call With Trump, Israel/Hamas Deal – RedState

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is still grappling with Russia. After a summer in which hopes for a peace agreement were high, Ukraine faced an autumn marked by intensifying Russian attacks.
Today, as a ceasefire is being prepared between Israel and Hamas, President Zelensky is expressing some hope for an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war, or at least some respite through a ceasefire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday that President Trump’s ability to successfully broker a peace deal between Israel and Hamas provides hope for an end to the war in Eastern Europe.
“If one war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well, including the Russian war,” Zelensky wrote in a statement on the social platform X, after a congratulatory call to Trump.
Zelensky used his official X account to make his thoughts known.
I had a very positive and productive call with US President Donald Trump. I congratulated @POTUS on his success and on the agreement in the Middle East that he was able to conclude, which constitutes an exceptional achievement. The message continues:
If one war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped too, including the Russian war.
I informed President Trump of Russian attacks on our energy system and appreciate his willingness to support us. We discussed the possibilities of strengthening our air defense, as well as the concrete agreements we are working on to achieve this. There are some good options and solid ideas on how to actually strengthen ourselves.
The Russian side must be ready to engage in real diplomacy – this can be achieved by force. Thank you, Mr. President!
This is certainly an encouraging note, but there are significant differences between the two conflicts.

Trump’s success in Middle East paves way for real fight, China says
First of all, Israel is largely struggling with civilian irregulars, Hamas terrorists. Ukraine and Russia employ, at least for the most part, traditional military forces, at least traditional for Eastern Europe. This is a clash between nations, not a clash between a nation and a horde of vicious barbarians. Russia under Tsar Vladimir I behaved badly, but Hamas committed atrocities on a scale that is difficult for most of us to understand.
Tsar Vladimir I’s Russia has one thing in common with Hamas: the Russians will most likely view a ceasefire as an opportunity to rest, recruit, re-equip, and plan for the next invasion. Even a comprehensive peace treaty won’t keep them there forever. Even if Hamas looks more like a pack of rabid weasels than Russia’s traditional bear, Ukraine – nor Israel – should under no circumstances take what they say literally.
The biggest weirdo in the bowl of borscht, however, is Vladimir Putin. He clearly has the ambition to rebuild the Soviet Union, or even the former Russian empire. It’s a dangerous notion, and he’s probably past the point where any major concessions or failures on his part could mean the end of his political career. In Russia these days it can mean a fate such as accidentally falling backwards out of a 4th floor window and landing on balls.
As I have been saying and writing since October 7, 2023, there will be no peace in Gaza until Hamas is no longer a factor. And Ukraine may never be safe on its eastern borders until Tsar Vladimir I, for whatever reason, is no longer a factor.
