Watch Live: Hegseth, Caine give Iran war update after U.S. and Iran trade fire in Strait of Hormuz

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine hold a news conference Tuesday morning as the ceasefire holds. Iranian War faces serious challenges. US Navy destroyers on Monday repelled a sustained barrage of Iranian missilesattack drones and small boats while helping two commercial ships cross the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s foreign minister said Monday’s violence demonstrated “there is no military solution” to the war, warning that the United States and its regional partners should “be wary of being dragged into the quagmire by bad guys.”
Two US Navy destroyers sailed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, avoiding a barrage of Iranian drones and missiles, according to defense officials. told CBS News. US Central Command said two U.S.-flagged commercial ships also crossed the strait as part of “Project Freedom,” an initiative by President Trump to move ships through the waterway.
US Central Command said Monday The United States destroyed six Iranian boats who had tried to interfere with commercial ships the Navy was guiding through the strait, and Mr. Trump later said it involved seven ships.
Iran’s official IRNA news agency rejected the claim, saying none of its so-called “speed boats” were destroyed on Monday.
Mr. Trump told Fox News on Monday that Iran would be “wiped off the face of the Earth” if the country intervened in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Fox News reporter Trey Yingst.
Iran, for its part, has warned that American forces will be attacked if they enter the strait. Iran seeks control of the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that normally carries about 20% of the world’s oil and has been largely closed since the war began in late February.
Iran also fired on targets in the United Arab Emirates and to a oil tanker owned by Abu Dhabi’s state energy company on Monday, the US-allied state said.
The back-and-forth could pose a test for the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which Mr. Trump extended indefinitely last month while the two sides negotiate a longer-term deal.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Monday that talks between the two countries are “progressing.” But he warned that the United States and the United Arab Emirates “should be wary of being dragged into the quagmire by bad guys.”
Mr. Trump, for his part, said this weekend that Iran’s latest peace proposal would likely not be acceptable because “they haven’t paid a high enough price yet.”
