The eldest son of beloved director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, praised his parents, who were “the center” of his life, in a Substack essay published Friday, four months after the two men were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home.

Nick Reiner, the couple’s younger son, who long struggled with drug addiction and mental illness, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

“What the hell do you say to someone who is experiencing this reality?” Jack Reiner wrote his first public comment on his parents’ deaths in his essay.

“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable. Of course, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother at the center of it. It’s almost too impossible to handle.”

On December 14, the day his parents’ bodies were discovered, Jake was celebrating the life of a close friend who had died when his sister Romy called to tell him the news.

“Every day since has been horrible. Every meeting we take, every person we speak to, every tear we shed, every move we make is tied to the murder of our parents. As we try to deal with the most devastating moment of your life, the world demands meetings, paperwork, decisions, and explanations; as if documentation should precede grieving,” he wrote.

“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to instantly lose both parents at the same time. It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that no, this isn’t a dream. This is truly my living nightmare.”

Jake said he and his mother, a photographer, always saw Les Misérables when the production traveled to Los Angeles.

During this time, he and his father shared a deep love of the Los Angeles Dodgers and often watched their games together.

“I will never again go to Dodger Stadium without feeling my father’s presence and hearing his voice telling me why Shohei Ohtani should never hit first,” he wrote.

As questions persist about the circumstances of his parents’ deaths, Jake concluded the Substack post with a request.

“I’m just asking for love and compassion – the same principles my parents lived by. »

The death of the Reiners caused shock waves in Hollywood. The son of a famous comedian, Rob made his name starring in the 1979 sitcom All in the Family. His national profile would skyrocket as he turned to directing. He was responsible for a string of 1980s hits, including the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally…, the romantic fantasy The Princess Bride, and This Is Spinal Tap, a film credited with popularizing the mockumentary genre.

In 2015, he made a loosely autobiographical film, Being Charlie, written by Nick, based on young Reiner’s bouts of homelessness and addiction. The drama also depicts a difficult son-father relationship.

A preliminary hearing in Nick’s case has been set for next week. Defense attorney Alan Jackson resigned as Nick’s lawyer in January, but maintained his former client was innocent.

If Nick is convicted of the murder charges, he faces the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors have not yet decided whether or not they will pursue the death penalty.
