WhatsApp could get a Reddit-style spoiler-hiding feature – so you won’t have to hide from group chats if you’re behind on the big shows

- A spoiler protection feature for WhatsApp is in the works
- It’s been spotted in beta for iOS and Android now
- There is already a similar feature in Reddit threads
WhatsApp is known for rolling out new upgrades at a regular pace, and there’s a feature in the works that could potentially help you avoid spoilers from friends and family for the big shows of the moment.
As spotted by WABetaInfo (via 9to5Mac), the latest WhatsApp for iOS beta comes with a spoiler format option, meaning the text won’t be revealed to recipients until it’s specifically typed into a message.
This would work similarly to the spoiler formatting option currently available on Reddit: when you open a post, the spoiler text is hidden, and you then have to click on it to see the message underneath.
This would mean you could continue chatting with contacts without worrying about seeing information about the latest plot twists on Bridgerton or Industry. The same feature has already appeared in beta versions of WHatsApp for Android.
Future
The new feature, assuming it eventually rolls out, would be particularly useful in group chats – where some participants might be updated on the latest happenings on top shows on streaming platforms and others might not.
It’s unclear how long it will take for this spoiler protection feature to come out of beta and into the official app, but it’s an upgrade that makes a lot of sense – and one that should end up being heavily used in WhatsApp conversations.
At the moment, spoiler tags cannot be applied to images and videos, but the WABetaInfo team speculates that this could eventually happen too, meaning you would be even better protected against reveals you don’t want to see.
Just yesterday, WhatsApp began rolling out another upgrade to group chats, allowing newcomers to those chats to see a selected portion of the group’s history, preventing the same information from being reposted over and over again.
