“Louise Lucas is a fairly prominent legislator in her state, but little known nationally, and the FBI and Justice Department have been investigating her for several years — three years, a source close to the investigation told me — and that investigation has examined evidence suggesting she solicited or accepted bribes,” Carol Leonnig, MS NOW’s senior investigative correspondent, told the network Wednesday.

Leonnig said that, according to his source, when Halligan “was running the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia, she was lobbying and pushing prosecutors to bring charges against Lucas, believing it would be important, a high priority case.”

“I was told that Halligan thought it would be good if the White House could, before the midterm elections, charge a prominent Virginia Democrat with corruption,” Leonnig said. added. “Norfolk-based prosecutors weren’t sure this was the strongest case in the world, but Halligan was convinced it should be pressed.”
