X, A Bastion For Hate, Claims It Will Reduce Hate Content In The UK

This is despite the visible increase in hateful content from X after Elon Musk purchased Twitter (eventually renamed to
“We have evidence that terrorist content and illegal hate speech persists on some of the biggest social media sites,” Oliver Griffiths, director of Ofcom’s online safety group, said in a statement. “We challenge them to tackle the problem and expect them to take strong action. This is of particular importance in the UK, following a number of recent hate crimes suffered by the country’s Jewish community.”
Specifically, X also plans to work with experts on hate and terrorist content in the UK, in addition to banning the offending accounts.
Ofcom says it will review X’s performance data every quarter over the next year. The regulator is also continuing its investigation into Elon Musk’s Grok AI for generating CSAM and non-consensual intimate images. In March, Ofcom also fined popular image posting site 4chan nearly $700,000 for breaches of the country’s online safety law. 4chan’s lawyer responded with an AI photo of a hamster.
Commitments to regulators are one thing, but they don’t mean much if X doesn’t actually implement them. And given Elon Musk’s daily posting (and re-posting) of racist content, it’s hard to believe that reducing hateful messaging is actually a priority, even if only localized to the UK.
