Xbox executive suggests fired employees use CoPilot to cope with Microsoft layoffs

The thousands of recently terminated Microsoft employees, sailing on one of the largest licensees in the company over the years in the middle of an industry upheaval period, already have a tool to cope with emotional load, according to an Xbox Exc: Microsoft Copilot.

The feeling was shared in an article Linkedin now removed by the executive producer of Xbox Game Studios Publishing, Matt Turnbull, captured at the time by the blog of play Consequencesthat reads:

“I know that these types of tools generate strong feelings in people, but I would be careful not to try to offer the best possible advice in the circumstances. I have experienced ways to use LLM AI tools (like Chatgpt or Copilot) to help reduce the emotional and cognitive load that accompanies job loss.”

On July 1, Xbox’s parent company announced that it would end around 9,000 employees – approximately four percent of its workforce – in a move intended to ensure that the company was created to succeed on a “dynamic market”. The job cuts affected the division of the company games, mainly Xbox staff members – a few months earlier, Microsoft cut 6,000 jobs, offering the same reasoning as recent layoffs and following a series of cuts in 2023 which saw 10,000 employees from its doors.

Many technological companies have reduced their workforce, citing market development and the impact of generative AI. A handful of CEOs, including Mark Zuckerberg de Meta and Klarna CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, clearly declared their intention to replace jobs and workflows with AI.

“At a time when mental energy is rare, these tools can help you take off more quickly, calmer and with more clarity,” wrote Turnbull, recommending to use Copilot to get help for hunting at work and obtaining “emotional clarity and confidence”. Microsoft Copilot would have become non -negotiable for Microsoft employees in recent months because he has trouble selling the assistant to other companies.

In May, CEO Mustafa Suleyman said that the company was trying to market Copilot as an emotionally therapeutic confidant to generation Z and millennium customers, the agent being now able to “detect a user’s comfort limits, diagnose problems and suggest solutions,” Fortune reported.

In general, professionals warned against chatbots fueled by AI to replace human therapy and emotional ties. In January, the American Psychological Association sent a letter urging the Federal Trade Commission to investigate harmful chatbots which deceive the support of psychological or mental health. The use of AI tools by the therapists themselves, in particular agentic AI, recording and transcription tools, and notostakers, has aroused new concerns about digital confidentiality.
