You Can Now Pay to Generate More Sora AI Videos, and I’m Concerned

Sora, OpenAI’s short-form AI video generator, has been available for barely a month now and is already helping spread misinformation on social media. Accounts share Sora generations without any transparency, sometimes with the Sora watermark deletedand while astute observers see through the AI, many people marching don’t think twice and believe that things that didn’t happen did happen. It could be as harmless as Jake Paul putting on makeup, or as dangerous as a fake interview intended to manipulate viewers into political bias. It’s getting scary out there.

So far for the free model, Sora has limited video generations to 30 per day. If you pay for the Pro model, you get 100 generations per day. But if you use Sora for free, once you’ve produced your 30th video, you can’t make any more. I consider this a good thing myself: 30 hyper-realistic AI videos per day per user is already path too high.

Unfortunately, OpenAI does not consult me and Sora now allows users to pay for additional generations once they reach the free limit. Bill Peebles, head of Sora, announced the change in an article published Thursday on According to Peebles, the Sora team thought 30 free generations per day would be enough, but that wasn’t the case. By offering users the option to pay for additional generations, OpenAI plans to start generating additional revenue from its popular short-form AI video generator.

Peebles also believes the company will generate future funds from a “new Sora economy.” This would include two parties: rights holders charging users fees to feature their characters or real people, as well as creators making money from the videos they post. If you don’t plan to pay for Sora generations, there’s some “bad” news: Peebles says the company will reduce the number of free generations as platforms grow, because the company doesn’t have enough GPUs to handle demand.

As The Verge reports, you’ll be able to purchase 10 additional generations of videos for $4 a piece, although the actual credits needed for each video can depend on many different factors. When you reach your limit, the app will let you purchase more through the App Store (Sora is currently only available on iOS). These credits will expire after 12 months, which I imagine will be enough for someone making Sora videos. You can also upload them for use on Codex, OpenAI’s coding platform.

Personally, I view Sora’s exponential growth as a bad thing. I have the finances: OpenAI now operates as a for-profit business and needs to generate revenue. But OpenAI, along with other AI companies, is blatantly ignoring the deepfake disinformation machine these products have become. The more the company pushes users to generate with Sora, the more realistic AI problems we’ll encounter in our streams.
